About the World Shipping Directory
The WSD Online includes details of over 76,000 marine related companies, providing address and communication information, as well as company profiles, contacts details and information on fleets and associated companies. The information is categorised by business sector and then by country.
Country information is also supplied, which includes an overview of the country , as well as political, economic, demographic and transportation details. Information on public holidays is also included.
A maritime profile provides outline information on the composition of the fleet by flag and type.
Registration to use WSD Online is free, although some sections can only be accessed by subscribers to the current edition of the World Shipping Directory. These are the sections that provide supplementary information on the companies (contacts, profiles, fleets, associated companies).

The Company
Lloyd's Register traces its origins to the coffee house of Edward Lloyd, which, in the latter part of the 17th century, had become a meeting place for those with a professional interest in ships and the cargoes they carried. In 1760, the Register Society was formed and the first Register of Ships was published in 1764.
Prime Publications dates its origins from 1883 when it was founded by Thomas Hope Robinson. Later acquired by John Prime it has always been synonymous with the shipping magazine Fairplay International' but also developed a series of databases which supported its maritime products.
Lloyd's Register - Fairplay is a joint venture company, formed in July, 2001 through the merger of Lloyd's Register's Maritime Information Publishing Group and Fairplay Publications Limited, an operating company owned by Prime Publications Limited.
In March 2008 Prime Publications Limited was acquired by IHS Inc. (www.ihs.com) effectively making IHS Inc a 50-50 partner in Lloyd’s Register - Fairplay
